New England Patriots head coach, Mike Vrabel, and former The Athletic reporter, Dianna Russini, are all over the media after pictures of them getting cosy surfaced a few weeks back. It was on April 7, 2026, when Page Six released pictures of Dianna and Mike from a luxury resort, in which the duo was seen sharing some alone time, sparking rumours of an alleged romance. Amid the fiasco, Mike addressed the press recently.

Mike Vrabel dodged several questions about Dianna Russini

During the pre-NFL draft press conference at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, a reporter asked Mike if he had “any thoughts” about Dianna Russini’s resignation from her position at The Athletic, but the head coach refused to respond to the same. Revealing how he would only answer questions related to his game, Mike said:

“I respect and I appreciate every single question, but I’m not going to be able to comment on anything as it relates to that. I appreciate your job and what you guys have got to do, but I have to make my comments and what I answer about our football team.”

In the same interaction, another reporter quipped whether he still stands by his initial comment about the controversy as ‘laughable’, the former linebacker said, ‘I think I’ve addressed what I felt like was important’. Mike was seen getting uncomfortable and dodging every question pertaining to Dianna Russini and the scandal.

Mike Vrabel revealed having a ‘difficult conversation’ with his family after Dianna Russini scandal

During the press conference, Mike spoke to the media and spoke about the Dianna Russini scandal. The Patriots’ head coach stated that he had a conversation with his team’s players as he didn’t want his personal life to hamper their game. Additionally, Mike also stated that he had some ‘difficult conversations’ with the people he cares about, which involve his family, the organisation where he works, the coaches and the players. In the same conversation, Mike also revealed that he regrets being the reason behind “distraction, comments and questions.”

A few days back, Page Six shared exclusive pictures of New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and New York Times NFL reporter Dianna Russini. In the photos, the two were seen spending time together at a hotel in Arizona. The images, reportedly taken on March 28, 2026, showed Dianna and Mike holding hands and hugging on a private rooftop bungalow during the evening. 

Vrabel addressed the viral pictures in the New York Post and brushed off the rumours about his affair with Dianna. He said that the pictures were innocent and that it was nothing but ‘laughable’. Dianna, on the other hand, stated that the viral photos didn’t include the other six people who were hanging out with them at the time, and that it’s normal for reporters to interact with sources away from the stadium and venues.

Dianna Russini resigned from The Athletic

Within a week of the scandal, Dianna Russini stepped down from her role at The Athletic on April 14, 2026. As per her letter to Executive Editor Steven Ginsberg, Dianna defended herself and stated that she had covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout her career. She said the public discussion had moved far away from facts and turned into constant speculation. Dianna also mentioned that she didn’t step away from her position because she is not at fault, but she didn’t wish to give any more attention to it.
