Fans of Miley Cyrus were left concerned after the pop star sobbed on stage two months after Dolly Partons death as she performed a tribute to her at the Hollywood Bowl

Miley Cyrus has sparked concern with fans after she was filmed sobbing on stage and struggling to speak. She battled to keep herself together as she interacted with crowds about her late, great godmother, Dolly Parton.

The 33-year-old was performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles when she began wiping her tears with a tissue. It seems she is still getting to grips with the death of the Jolene singer, who tragically died back in August at 80 years old after a brief battle with cancer. Her husband of 59 years, Carl Thomas Dean, had died the previous year, in 2025.

Dolly was Miley’s godmother and a huge inspiration to her own career journey. The connection comes through Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, who became friends with Dolly in the Nashville/country music scene.

But over the years, Dolly and Miley formed their own close bond, which is why the live tribute would have been so difficult for the “We Can’t Stop” pop star. Miley and her godmother appeared together on Hannah Montana, singing competition The Voice, the 61st Annual Grammy Awards and Dollywood’s 25th Anniversary Celebration.

On stage, Miley sat wiping tears from her eyes while she said: “Some of the greatest music we have today was written, produced and performed by my aunt Dolly. This is one of those songs”.

Previously to that, she’d said: “Sitting here with you all right now, feeling her all around me, knowing that she’s right here beside me, every day, more than she could be when she was here. I feel her more now than ever.

“This memory is gold to me. Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart, and I’m gonna see her again”.

In the raw, emotional footage posted by @mileysourcenews on Instagram, she asked the audience whether they could see her if she sat down, and they cheered ‘yes’, so she launched into a performance of a version of arguably Dolly Parton’s most iconic song, ‘Jolene’.

While singing it, she kept it together, but she did still look extremely emotional, as she had just lost someone incredibly close to her.

And while she paid a gorgeous tribute to Dolly, a stunning picture of her was in the background so the audience could see her as Miley performed.

Comments from fans

Many praised Miley for the raw performance, which must have been difficult for her to get out. One fan wrote: “She’s become such an amazing woman. I really wish her the best”.

Another said: “Her authenticity has always been amazing. So glad everyone’s finally seeing it and loving it”.

A third expressed concern about her, saying: “Aww, you can feel her pain through her voice cracking at the start. That’s pure raw emotion. Thank you, Miley”.

A fourth wrote: “Miley is hands down one of the most talented artists. Also, she looks stunning”.

Miley Cyrus’ career so far

Miley Cyrus launched into global stardom as a teenager in 2006 when she starred as Hannah Montana on Disney Channel.

She released songs such as ‘Breakout’ and ‘Party in the USA,’ but soon became determined to leave her pop-princess teen-idol image behind.

In the 2010s, she underwent a complete vibe shift and released the album ‘Bangerz,’ which leaned into a more hip-hop influence and featured provocative visuals that got tongues wagging.

‘Wrecking Ball’ and ‘We Can’t Stop’ were certainly talking points, especially with her total image change as well, as she cut her hair incredibly short, and audiences were gobsmacked.

She continued to experiment with genre and has now settled on a country vibe. Her song ‘Flowers’ dominated global streaming charts and earned her long-overdue recognition in the industry, including her first Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

She’s now got a reputation as one of this generation’s most adaptable vocalists, celebrated for her vocal strength, country-rock roots, and continuous reinvention.
