Thoothukudi:Fisheries minister Srinath on Monday dismissed Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Rajathi Karunanidhi’s criticism of the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Thoothukudi district, where six murders were reported over four days.
He termed the allegations baseless and claimed that people felt safe and secure under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s administration.
In a post on X, Kanimozhi accused the Vijay-led TVK government of failing to maintain law and order, citing a spate of murders in the district. She described the incidents as evidence of what she called “reels governance” and questioned the government’s ability to ensure public safety.
The six cases included the murders of Velmurugan (20) at Kulasekarapattinam, near Tiruchendur, and farmer Kombaiah alias Ganesan(64) on October 22, Vijila (39) of Muthalur, near Sathankulam, on October 23, fisherman Palani of Therespuram and Samuel (35) of Eral on October 24, Dhanushkodi, who was injured in a murder attempt on October 23, later succumbed to injuries in hospital on October 25, and the latest, a college student, Esakkiraja (20), who was murdered at Alwarkarkulam, near Srivaikundam, on October 26.
Responding to the allegations, Thoothukudi superintendent of police R. Shiva Prasad said a detailed investigation had established that the six murders arose from personal disputes and not from a general breakdown of law and order.
The cases involved disputes between friends, a family feud between brothers and a love affair, among other personal enmities, he said.
The accused in the six cases had no previous criminal records and were not history-sheeters under police surveillance, the SP said. All the accused had been arrested and legal action was under way. The police were taking immediate action whenever a murder was reported in the district, he added.
Shiva Prasad further added that 65 murder cases had been reported in the district up to October 26 last year and that the number had declined by 10 per cent this year. Following the instructions of the DGP, to curb murders and other crimes, the district police had intensified patrolling and preventive arrests, he said.
The SP also assured the public that the police would continue to take steps to maintain law and order in the district and that they need not panic.
