NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday greeted people on the occasion of Mahalaya and prayed for the blessings of Goddess Durga to bring happiness, compassion, hope and prosperity to society.

In a post on X, Modi said, “Shubho Mahalaya! We seek the blessings of Maa Durga. May the blessings fill our society with happiness, compassion and hope. May there be peace and prosperity all around.” The Prime Minister also shared his greetings in Bengali.

Mahalaya marks the end of Pitri Paksha, a fortnight dedicated to paying homage to ancestors, and the beginning of Devi Paksha, which heralds the arrival of Goddess Durga and the countdown to Durga Puja.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga begins her journey from Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva, to her parental home on Earth, accompanied by her children.

The occasion holds special significance in West Bengal and other eastern states, where devotees traditionally begin the day by listening to ‘Mahishasura Mardini’, a devotional programme narrating the goddess’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura.

Devotees also perform tarpan, a ritual offering of water and prayers in memory of departed ancestors.

This year, Mahalaya falls on October 10, while Sharad Navratri begins on October 11. The festivities will culminate in Vijayadashami on October 20.
