With less than a month to go before Khalifa storms into cinemas, the makers have shared a major update that is sure to excite Mohanlal fans. The Malayalam superstar has completed dubbing for his portions in the Prithviraj Sukumaran-led action entertainer, marking the end of his work on the film’s first instalment.
Mohanlal plays Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali, the grandfather of Prithviraj’s character, Aamir Ali. While his appearance in Khalifa: Part 1 is expected to be brief, the filmmakers have consistently hinted that the character is central to the franchise’s larger narrative.
Director Vysakh took to social media to announce the milestone, sharing pictures from the dubbing studio. Alongside the images, he wrote, “Mohanlal has officially finished his magic in part 1. Now, the real wait begins for Part 2. I can’t wait to witness the incredible surprises he has in store for us. The journey is only just beginning.”
The update comes after months of speculation surrounding Mohanlal’s role, with the makers now confirming that his presence in the opening chapter serves as the foundation for a much bigger story.
A sprawling action saga heads to theatres
Earlier, the team had teased the importance of Mohanlal’s character with the line, “Meet the legend in part 1 and know his bloody history in part 2.” The statement suggests that Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali’s past will become one of the driving forces of the sequel, making his appearance in the first film far more significant than a conventional cameo.
Scripted by Jinu Abraham, Khalifa is mounted as a large-scale commercial action thriller revolving around international gold-smuggling syndicates. Prithviraj headlines the film as Aamir Ali, a feared figure whose criminal empire stretches across borders. The project has been envisioned as a two-part saga, with the first chapter laying the groundwork for the larger conflict.
The film also reunites Vysakh with Mohanlal after Pulimurugan and Monster, while marking the filmmaker’s second collaboration with Prithviraj following Pokkiriraja. With Vysakh returning to the action genre that earned him some of his biggest commercial successes, expectations are understandably high.
Khalifa has been produced on an ambitious scale and features music by Jakes Bejoy, cinematography by Jomon T. John and action choreography by Yannick Ben. The cast also includes Neil Nitin Mukesh, Indrans, Malavika Sharma, Shine Tom Chacko and Sampath Raj in pivotal roles.
