BHOPAL: Majority of MLAs of Indore in Madhya Pradesh skipped a meeting called by state urban administration minister Kailash Vijayvargiya to prepare a contingency plan to deal with the looming water crisis, triggered by the weak monsoon, leading Congress to take a pot-shot at the elected representatives.

Mr. Vijayvargiya convened a meeting of the elected representatives and officials in Indore on Thursday to take stock of the situation in the wake of the relatively dry monsoon.

Only four out of nine MLAs in Indore attended the meeting, raising an eyebrow in the official as well as political circles here.

Later, Mr. Vijayvargiya’s attention was drawn to the matter by the media.

“Ask those who did not attend the meeting. Why are you asking me. May be that their areas are facing no water problem”, he quipped and hastened to add that ‘It is a festival season, too’.

The minister said that the deficient rainfall in the outgoing monsoon has raised the prospect of a water crisis in the Malwa-Nimar region under which Indore falls.

The rainfall recorded was 40 percent below the normal rainfall.

While the region experiences a normal rainfall of 38-40 inches during the monsoon, this season the rainfall was recorded at 23.20 inches.

“We should prepare a contingency plan to deal with a prospective water shortage before the problem becomes acute. We should start conservation of water”, he said.

State Congress president Jitu Patwari took a swipe at MLAs who were absent at the meeting, saying that it indicated that they hardly bother about the problems of the city.
