Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav on Monday moved a resolution in the one-day special session of the House supporting 33 percent reservation for women in the parliament and state Assemblies amid walk out by the Opposition Congress for the denial by the speaker to adopt a private bill demanding immediate implementation of reservation for the fair sex.
The one-day special session of the Assembly was called to extend support to the women’s quota bill defeated in the Lok Sabha recently.
Mr. Yadav had earlier indicated that a censure motion against the Opposition for defeating the women’s quota bill would be passed in the special session of the House.
The House continued to deliberate on the resolution moved by the chief minister till the last reports came.
After the House passed the obituary motion paying respect to late playback singer Asha Bhonsle, Congress Legislature Party leader Umang Singhar wanted to move a private bill seeking immediate discussion and enforcement of the Women’s Reservation Act passed by the parliament in 2023.
Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar however declined to take up the bill, ruling that the government resolution on the issue- scheduled to be moved by the chief minister- had already been listed.
Parliamentary affairs minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and BJP MLA Sitasharan Sharma argued that under rules and convention, a government proposal takes precedence over a private bill.
Senior Congress leader Bala Bachhan however supported his colleague Mr. Singhar, leading to heated exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches.
The Opposition Congress staged a walk out in the house when the speaker ruled that the government resolution would be taken up for discussion.
