‘My make-up always pilled on top of my SPF until I tried these 3 sunscreens’

With summer virtually here, I’ve found 3 face sunscreens that sit perfectly under make-up, while providing sun protection and skin benefits

As someone who wears SPF every single day, I’ve spent years trying to find the perfect balance between protecting my skin and getting my make-up to sit properly. If you’ve ever applied your sunscreen, carefully blended your foundation on top, only to watch everything start rolling, balling up or flaking off your face, you’ll know exactly how frustrating pilling can be.

For the longest time, I assumed I was doing something wrong, that maybe I wasn’t waiting long enough between skincare steps, using too many products or using clogged-up make-up brushes. But after a lot of trial and error, I realised that the sunscreen itself often makes all the difference.

Thankfully, I’ve made it my mission to fix my problem, and I’ve found three SPFs that sit exceptionally well under my make-up. They absorb quickly, layer perfectly under foundation, and most importantly, don’t leave me with those annoying flakes that bobble up halfway through my routine. So, if you’re also just as tired of your make-up pilling every time you apply SPF, these are the sunscreens that finally solved the problem for me.

Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50+ Lightweight Zinc SKINSCREEN 50ml

Available for £38

If I had to choose what makes my skin look the best, it would probably be this one. The formula feels almost like a hybrid between a skin tint and a sunscreen, blurring imperfections while adding a healthy glow. On a ‘good skin day’ I could get away with just wearing this and no foundation. The downside is that it only seems to be available in one shade, and reviewers with sensitive skin or rosacea have said it can cause irritation.

Riemann P20 Urban Shield Face SPF50+ Sun Cream

Available for £29

As someone who lives in London, this has become a new favourite of mine. It offers high SPF50+ protection and layers seamlessly under my foundation. It definitely has a thicker consistency than the other two, but I love that it doesn’t leave my face feeling greasy. Compared to the others, it does take a little longer to fully blend in, but once it’s absorbed, it’s an excellent base for make-up that lasts throughout the day.

L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Plumping Aqua-Fluid SPF30 Moisturiser

Available for £15.99

Whenever I want that ‘glass skin’ look, this is the SPF I reach for. The lightweight fluid offers hydrating, sun protection and a gorgeous plumping finish that makes my skin look fresh and healthy. It sits gorgeously under make-up, and is one of the few products that means I can skip moisturiser altogether. My main reservation is that it offers SPF30 rather than SPF50, so on days when UV levels are particularly high, I tend to opt for one of the higher-protection creams instead.
