Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has taken a dramatic turn after new claims surfaced about her elder daughter, Annie Guthrie, and her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. Notably, they were the latest people to see the 84-year-old, which has consistently sparked speculations about their role in the case on social media. Now, former FBI agent, Jennifer Coffindaffer has added another layer to the conversation after questioning whether Tommaso is still teaching in Arizona. These claims come at a time when reports suggest the couple have not been seen in public for over a week.

Former FBI agency raises questions about Tommaso Cioni’s teaching status

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer recently shared new observations in a lengthy post on X. She claimed to have personally checked BASIS Oro Valley’s teacher listings. But, she could not find Tommaso Cioni’s name listed there. It was earlier reported that Tommaso worked there as a sixth-grade biology teacher at the school. In her words:

“Some have reported that Annie & Tomasso have not been seen. I personally checked BASIS Oro Valley, where Tomasso teaches 6th-grade biology. I do not see his name listed as a teacher.”

However, she also clarified that there could be multiple reasons for the same. According to her, Tommaso might have taken leave from the school, or the institution might have removed his details from their listing due to the intense attention on the case. She also suggested that the ongoing case might have caused emotional and professional damage to the couple.

Jennifer mentioned the possibility of reputational harm, public ridicule and even future defamation lawsuits. In fact, they could also file cases for the harm caused to their son, Pietro. The couple might take the call if authorities continued to believe that the couple had nothing to do with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. However, Annie was still listed as a poetry teacher at the University of Arizona. Sharing her views on the possibility of the couple filing a lawsuit, the former FBI agent said:

“As I see it, their low profile, lack of band appearances, possible effects on work income, and what their child may be going through would all be part of such a suit in terms of damages.”

Why have Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni remained at the centre of attention?

Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni have faced constant public scrutiny in Nancy Guthrie’s missing case. It is mainly because they were among the last people known to have seen Nancy Guthrie before she disappeared. According to investigators, Nancy had dinner at the couple’s Tucson-area home on the night before she went missing. Some reports also alleged that Tommaso later drove Nancy back to her home in Catalina Foothills sometime around 9:30 p.m. Later, she disappeared without a trace.

Initially, former NewsNation journalist, Ashleigh Banfield reportedly mentioned Tommaso as a possible suspect in her podcast discussion. Although law enforcement agencies had immediately denied the claims, the speculation had already gone viral. Things became more intense after authorities had temporarily seized Annie and Tommaso’s vehicle for forensic examination. But, they later clarified that they examined the car because it was the last vehicle Nancy used. So, it was a standard investigative procedure. At the same time, unverified theories about Tommaso’s band, the couple’s finances, and family tensions surfaced.

Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos cleared Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni

Despite ongoing rumours, Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos, who is overseeing the investigation into the Nancy Guthrie case, cleared her family within a few days of the investigation. In previous press statements, he also denied all rumours of the alleged involvement of Tommaso Cioni and Annie Guthrie in the case. He also criticised the online commentators, calling the accusations “wrong” and “cruel”. Clearing the family, he said:

“To be clear, the Guthrie family, to include all siblings and spouses, has been cleared as possible suspects in this case”.
