The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has formally requested the Indian External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, to initiate direct flight services between San Francisco, California, and Amritsar, Punjab. In a letter addressed to the minister, NAPA’s executive director, Satnam Singh Chahal, emphasized the importance of air connectivity in enhancing bilateral relations and fostering cultural, economic, and social ties between the United States and India.
Chahal pointed out that while numerous flights connect various Indian cities to international destinations, the lack of a direct link between San Francisco and Amritsar has been a persistent issue for both the diaspora and local business communities. He highlighted San Francisco’s role as a major hub for technology and innovation, suggesting that a direct flight would not only facilitate travel but also boost tourism, trade, and investment by promoting greater people-to-people contact.
The letter urged Jaishankar to engage with relevant authorities, including civil aviation agencies and airlines, to explore the feasibility of establishing this much-needed air route. According to Chahal, such a connection would significantly enhance convenience for travelers and contribute to economic growth in both regions by encouraging cultural exchanges and strengthening educational ties.
