The Last House has become one of the most talked-about sci-fi films on Netflix. The film grabbed viewers’ attention with its out-of-the-box survival premise, star cast, and a bizarre promotional stunt. Yes! We are talking about the billboard house that is located at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Selma Avenue. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the film stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura in the lead and revolves around a family that gets mysteriously trapped inside their own home.
What is The Last House about?
The Last House is a 2026 sci-fi horror thriller about a family of four who suddenly find themselves sealed inside their home with no way out. The film follows the story of ‘Jason’ and ‘Ann’ and their children, who are put through a bizarre situation after an inexplicable phenomenon turns their house into a prison. Doors and windows cannot be opened or broken, while communication with the outside world disappears.
What remains the film’s biggest mystery is the strange rain that appears to be connected to the family’s confinement. While the phenomenon prevents people from leaving their homes, strange creatures emerge during the rain, leaving the family even more petrified. The family eventually discovers that the seemingly ordinary weather event is far more dangerous and mysterious than they initially imagined.

However, another hurdle hits them as food and other supplies gradually dwindle, and the family is forced to adapt to an increasingly frightening new reality. They work together to survive while trying to understand the mysterious force keeping them trapped.
What is the significance of the dog scene in The Last House?
Another much-asked question is about the dog scene. The Last House takes a tragic turn when the family’s ailing golden retriever runs out of his medication and is no longer able to move around. So, ‘Jason’ has to make the heartbreaking decision to end his life. He shoots the elderly dog while ‘Ann’ and the kids are watching their favorite movie, Annie.

Making the whole ordeal even more stomach-churning as the children cover their ears, crying as they attempt to sing along to the musical. As they reach the chorus of upbeat anthem Tomorrow, a faint gunshot rumbles in the background. Greta Lee recalls how they shot the scene and shared:
“Oh, God, there was so much that went into that! You have no idea. It just speaks to how incredibly absurd our job is. Collectively as a cast, we were having to pretend that we were grieving the death of our beloved family dog, when in reality, our stunt dog would not play dead. I remember us crying and saying goodbye while trying to hold the dog down a little bit because he kept getting up. The comic absurdity of that was wild. It was just like, ‘Yeah, this is all fake.'”
The Last House cast features Greta Lee as ‘Ann’ and Wagner Moura as ‘Jason’, the parents fighting to protect their family. The ensemble also includes Riley Chung, Emma Ho, Noah Alexander Sosnowski and Gabriel Barbosa. The film is helmed by Louis Leterrier, the French filmmaker who also directed The Incredible Hulk, Now You See Me and Fast X.
