Newark spring athletes earn Ohio Capital Conference recognition

COLUMBUS – The Newark baseball team is in the midst of one of its best seasons in two decades, and several Wildcats recently were honored for their contributions during a memorable regular season.

Senior Moses Crane was voted Co-Player of the Year for the Buckeye Division by the Ohio Capital Conference coaches. Crane is a two-way standout both at the plate and from the mound or shortstop for Newark, which finished runner-up in the Buckeye standings.

Joining Crane on the first team was senior Bodie Smith. Smith excelled defensively in center field and offensively as a run-producing bat in the middle of the Wildcats’ order.

Senior Brody Driskel and sophomore Brody Randall second team were named to the second team, senior Luke Miller to the special mention list and Cale Saunders to the honorable mention list. Senior Blake Newsome was honored as the Wildcats’ scholar athlete.

Newark’s Moses Crane recently was named the Co-Player of the Year for the Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division.

Softball

Junior Lexi Shanaberg was named to the OCC-Buckeye softball first team. The junior catcher recently became the Wildcats’ all-time leader in home runs.

Senior Mallory Back was named to the second team and honored as the Wildcats’ scholar athlete. Junior Savannah Woody was named to the special mention list, and senior Maygen Woody was named to the honorable mention list.

Boys Tennis

Freshman Wes Arnold was named to the OCC-Buckeye boys tennis second team for his play at No. 3 singles.

Sophomore Isaac DeVries and junior Bradley Pastorius were named to the third team at No. 2 doubles.

Boys Lacrosse

Junior Kolin Clark was named to the OCC-Ohio boys lacrosse honorable mention list for his play as an attacker.

Senior Harrison Walsh was honored as the Wildcats’ scholar athlete.

Girls Lacrosse

Senior Carly Samples was honored as Newark’s scholar athlete for OCC-Ohio girls lacrosse.

Boys Volleyball

Senior Miles Drake was named to the OCC-Ohio boys volleyball second team for his play as a setter and outside hitter. He also was honored as the Wildcats’ scholar athlete.

Zalyn Hanzey was named to the honorable mention list.
