Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja’s tragic demise has left the mountaineering world mourning. He passed away after facing a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The tragic incident occurred on July 30, 2026, when the 43-year-old was hit by a massive slide at approximately 6,600 to 7,000 meters in height. The fatal incident brought to focus Nims’ family, particularly his brave wife, Suchi Purja. He once opened up about her contributions and sacrifices that helped him pursue his dream.

Nirmal Purja (also known as Nimsdai) and Suchi Purja were the type of couple people look up to. The duo’s love and mutual respect were enviable. She was very supportive of her husband’s thrilling yet dangerous mountaineering ventures, and he never shied away from crediting her for it. When Nims was awarded an honorary doctorate, he dedicated the accolade to his wife. He asked Suchi, who was seated in the audience, to stand up so that everybody in the room gets to see the one whose support led him to the achievement.
Addressing Suchi as “my love”, Nims shared that her silent backing and sacrifices are what led him to achieve his dreams. He shared the challenges of working in the busy unit, SBS and thanked his wife for never complaining about his lifestyle. Nims Purja praised her resilience and the sacrifices she made managing the family on her own. The mountaineer was glad that she understood that he wouldn’t be around 24/7. Saying “thank you sweetheart” for her contribution in his life, he mentioned:
“I would also like to dedicate this honour to my beautiful wife, Suchi…Ladies and gentlemen you know I serve in the most busiest unit in the world, SBS and the best. We call it water missing cycle. She was with me there and from there to now I spent 11 months away from the family on the big mountains. I run nine different companies and I’m still breaking the world records. Without Suchi I wouldn’t be who I am today.

Nims and Suchi were reportedly married for about a decade. They are also parents to a baby girl, named Himani Purja, who was born around 2022-23. While the couple never introduced the world to their child, they announced that they were expecting their first baby in June 2022. The couple shared pictures from the maternity shoot on Instagram. The mesmerizing pictures were taken by photographer Sophie Wheeler, who wrote:
“A huge congratulations to @nimsdai and @suchipurja who have just announced their pregnancy this morning. An absolute honor for me to capture these photos for you! Beyond beautiful!”
Nims and Suchi didn’t share any updates after the birth of their little one, keeping her date of birth and other specifics private. They chose to keep their personal life and their kid away from the spotlight. Nims Purja occasionally shares family moments on his official Instagram, but both parents rarely speak publicly about their daughter.
Nims’ better half came under the spotlight after appearing in Netflix’s 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible alongside him. The documentary follows Nims Purja’s historic mission to climb all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in a record time of seven months. In the doc film, Suchi Purja briefly appeared and spoke about her husband’s tough goal, sharing her belief that he would complete it.
