BENGALURU: Assuring the people to initiate measures to protect the interests of the State with regard to sharing River Cauvery water, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Friday clarified “no water has been discharged from reservoirs of the State in Cauvery basin in July but only .6 tmc flowed to Tamil Nadu which is a regular flow (in River Cauvery).”
“The .6 tmc of water is the lowest water to have reached Tamil Nadu in 100 years,” stated D.K. Shivakumar and asked the pro-Kannada organisations to drop their plan to hold ‘Karnataka bandh’ on August 13 against release of water to Tamil Nadu. A bandh will cause inconvenience to the people, he said and stated “I on behalf of the State Government assure commitment to protect the interests of the State.” The Chief Minister requested the protesters “We are with you. A bandh won’t solve the problem.”
Divulging the details of water availability in four major reservoirs in Cauvery basin, Shivakumar said Harangi has water storage of about 95 percent, Kabini has storage of 83 percent, Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir has storage of 36 percent and Hemavathy has storage of 67 percent at the moment.
There was satisfactory rainfall in the last 3 years in the Cauvery basin which made Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir in Mandya fill-up faster than it used to be. The previous Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered puja to River Cauvery since the reservoir fill-up fast. he said and pointed out as against Supreme Court order to release 177.25 tmc to Tamil Nadu, as much as 400 tmc flowed to Tamil Nadu since Karnataka could not storage the excess water and excess water entered Bay of Bengal from Tamil Nadu.
Over submissions made to Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee, the Chief Minister said Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited Managing Director and two advisors participated in the meeting and made submissions and even at the meeting of Cauvery Water Management Authority, Advocate General, Additional Chief Secretary effectively made their submissions on the prevailing grounds realities in the Cauvery basin.
