Chennai: Congress party’s top leader Rahul Gandhi will visit Tamil Nadu on August 1 and deliberate with office-bearers as part of the party’s grassroots rejuvenation initiative “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan,” the party said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters here, AICC general secretary, and Tamil Nadu incharge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and TNCC president B Manickam Tagore said Gandhi would address office-bearers on Saturday at nearby Mamallapuram on the valedictory of the 10-day training camp (July 23-August 1) for District Congress Committee presidents.
Gandhi is expected to arrive in Chennai by 11 am on August 1 and preside over the party event at the seashore town here and later leave for Delhi by 6 PM from Chennai.
The training camp for the DCC presidents is an initiative aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan (SSA).
Tagore, when asked on the scope for Gandhi meeting Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, said that the top leader’s Chennai programme was organisational in nature. Congress is part of the TVK-led coalition Cabinet.
The TNCC chief said: “This is strictly an organisational meeting.” During such programme interactions, Rahul spends nearly six hours with the district presidents in each state to discuss future plans and the organisation.
Further, Tagore added: “This is a travel schedule related solely to the organisation…his time is meant to be spent entirely with the district presidents.”
Ahmad Mir said: “Rahul Gandhi will have a detailed interaction with the DCC presidents and their families also. Therefore this is important so far as strengthening the party organisation at the grassroots is concerned…Our national leader may meet some senior Congress leaders also before leaving the city.”
Tagore, Mir and former Congress president K Selvaperunthagai and AICC secretary Nivedith Alva were among the leaders who addressed the district presidents on Friday at Mamallapuram.
Tourism Minister and Congress legislature party leader S Rajesh Kumar said he interacted on Friday with the district presidents, who were appointed under the SSA.
In a statement, the minister said that SSA was a historic effort aimed at shaping the Congress party into a robust popular movement for the future.
By strengthening the party right from the grassroots level, the initiative is aimed at raising a new generation of leaders grounded in ideological clarity, public outreach, organisational skill, and dedication to service.
The 10-day training camp went beyond developing leadership skills, as it deepened the district presidents’ commitment to taking the party’s ideology, organisational capability, and public ties to every village, town, and district, Rajesh Kumar said.
Expressing full confidence in the participants, he added that district presidents returning home after the training would drive the party forward with renewed enthusiasm, clear goals, and trust.
The SSA program’s successful path is based on building a strong, grassroots-rooted organisation through politics directly connected to the people, he added.
Gandhi is visiting to “enthuse cadres and devise new political strategies,” the TNCC said in a statement adding “Let the new India’s history begin from Tamil Nadu.”
Earlier, when Mir arrived at the airport here, Tagore and Congress party leaders accorded him a warm welcome.
