Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Friday arrested Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer Bhimsen Tudu in connection with the death of MBBS student Chandrika Hembram, whose body was found near Trisulia Overbridge on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar earlier this month.
Police sources said Tudu, who was reportedly absconding since the incident came to light, was apprehended in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district following a search operation. He was subsequently brought to Bhubaneswar and taken into custody for questioning.
The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation into the death of Chandrika, a medical student, whose body was recovered on June 4. The case triggered widespread public attention and led to an intensive probe by the Commissionerate Police.
Addressing reporters, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rishikesh Khilari said the preliminary investigation had revealed persistent strain in the relationship between the deceased and Tudu, who was reportedly her boyfriend.
“The victim was a medical student. After examining the chats and considering information provided by family members, we found indications of continuing discord in the relationship. We also came across discussions regarding a possible breakup, which could be one of the factors behind the incident,” the DCP said.
According to investigators, Chandrika had attempted to contact Tudu multiple times on the day of the incident. Police said she first called him from her own phone and later tried reaching him using another person’s mobile number. Both calls allegedly went unanswered.
The police have seized Tudu’s laptop and tablet and are examining digital evidence, including information retrieved from WhatsApp. Investigators have also collected CCTV footage and seized the victim’s mobile phone for forensic analysis.
Khilari said further details would emerge after forensic examination of the electronic devices and digital records. He added that Tudu could be taken on remand for further questioning if required.
The deceased student’s family has alleged that relationship-related issues drove her to take the extreme step and has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation. Family members have also claimed that disputes between the two were linked to concerns over her complexion and professional background.
Before his arrest, Tudu had approached the High Court of Orissa seeking anticipatory bail amid mounting allegations in the case.
Police officials maintained that the investigation remains ongoing and that all possible angles are being examined. No final conclusions have been drawn regarding the circumstances leading to Chandrika’s death, they said.
