Oasis experienced a huge spike of more than 300% for their hit, Wonderwall, in just an hour after England’s sensational World Cup win against Mexico
Oasis experienced a huge spike of more than 300% for their hit, Wonderwall, in just an hour after it became an unofficial anthem for England’s World Cup 2026 team.
Those lucky enough to nab tickets to see Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and co in the stands have taken to chanting the 1995 hit after the final whistle during the tournament so far, with the footballers proudly singing it back.
This has, unsurprisingly, led to emotional scenes at the grounds, as well as for those watching on from home. Following the team’s win against Mexico in the early hours of this morning, Spotify bosses confirmed that there was a colossal spike for those listening to the track.
According to data from the music streaming platform, the track received 306% more listeners during the hour immediately after the win – compared to the same hour the previous day.
Streams are said to have risen from 1,628 to 6,614 after the nail-biting match finished, with Wonderwall racking up an 18% overall daily increase, and a total of 200,441 streams across the full 24-hour period.
The Grammy-winning hit was penned by Noel Gallagher and included on the group’s (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? album, released in 1995. It reached number two in the charts but has gone on to become one of their biggest songs.
Amid rumours of another tour on the horizon, Liam Gallagher couldn’t help but tease the England captain for losing his voice after celebrating their win against Mexico.
The Bayern Munich player captained the national team to victory and scored a penalty to send them into the quarter finals of the competition, setting up a tie against Norway on Saturday.
Moments after the win, fans erupted into a rendition of Wonderwall at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where they were joined for the moving scenes by those on the pitch.
Addressing the cameras after the final whistle, Harry appeared to lose his voice in a chat with BBC Sport, something that tickled Liam.
Taking to Twitter, he quipped: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL [sic].”
After a delayed start, the game kicked off at 2am and pubs remained open until well after the sun came up, meaning those in the UK could celebrate in style – with Susanna Reid, Piers Morgan, Dan Walker and Coleen Rooney among the stars staying up.
EastEnders’ Ross Kemp has become a highlight for his legendary reaction videos, and the latest one didn’t disappoint.
Branding the team “heroic” and “courageous”, he declared: “That is without a doubt the best England performance I think I’ve ever seen. “That is without a doubt true English spirit.
“I am so proud. If you can do that, you can beat anybody. Come on England, bring it on.”
