Oasis’ hit song Wonderwall is on the brink of reaching the number one spot in the official charts after being adopted during England’s surging World Cup run. Since the tournament kicked off, England fans and players have been singing the iconic tune which was released on the album What’s The Story Morning Glory, at the end of games.
Wonderwall is the biggest-selling single by a UK act to have never reached No1. It peaked at No2 in 1995 when it was kept off the top spot by Robson & Jerome’s I Believe.
After becoming an unofficial anthem that’s united supporters of England, the tune has made it’s way back into the charts, and has even had support from Oasis themselves . Liam Gallagher, who co-founded the band with his brother Noel tweeted this week: “C’mon England c’mon Wonderwall.”
The Official Charts said: “Oasis’s Wonderwall, newly adopted by England players and supporters as the soundtrack to this summer’s charge, could rocket nine places to Number 2 this week, according to today’s Official Singles Chart update.” Three Lions, by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds, is expected to take the No3 spot.
The players have spoken about their support for Wonderwall becoming an official anthem in the past. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said: “On the pitch after the game and we were just connecting with the fans and they were singing. That was special.
“I think it’s one of them moments — just a memory now — it’s gone. You never get that moment back. Being in Dallas, singing Wonderwall. There’s nothing like that first time.”
Noel said previously: “Wonderwall belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players. Best of luck to everyone who’s made the trip out there.”

However, there is one major pop hit it will have to overtake. Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s record-breaking Rein Me In, still holding firm at Number 1 in the update from the charts, and it’s set to remain number one for the 17th non-consecutive week.
The song has been a huge hit since its release in 2025, and recently made history by smashing a record that had been held for 32 years. Their collaborative smash-hit ballad, Rein Me In, clocked its 16th non-consecutive week at the top spot on the Official UK Singles Chart on Friday, July 10.
By logging 16 weeks at the top, the duo surpassed the previous record set by Scottish band Wet Wet Wet, whose 1994 hit Love Is All Around had spent 15 weeks at Number 1.
