Production is underway on Operation Ganga, the upcoming Malayalam film directed by Vishnu Mohan and headlined by Mohanlal. Inspired by the Indian government’s efforts to evacuate citizens stranded in Ukraine and neighbouring countries during the 2022 Russian invasion, the film brings together talent from across the Indian film industries.
Produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the Sree Gokulam Movies banner, Operation Ganga has already attracted attention for its ensemble cast. Hindi actor Arjun Rampal is among the notable names associated with the project, which marks his first appearance in a Malayalam film and his first collaboration with Mohanlal.
On Wednesday, Arjun shared a series of behind-the-scenes stills from the sets, including photographs of himself alongside Mohanlal. Reflecting on the experience of sharing screen space with the Malayalam superstar, the actor wrote on social media, “Such an honour to have the privilege to share screen space with you Sir. It has been inspirational. The supremely talented and gifted Mohanlal. Thank you.”
The collaboration comes at an interesting point in Arjun’s career, with the actor having recently drawn attention for his performance as an ISI operative in the Dhurandhar franchise, where he starred alongside Ranveer Singh. He was also seen in Satluj as a CBI officer. The film, which had faced a prolonged delay, eventually received a brief release on ZEE5 before being removed from the platform.
Operation Ganga Brings Together Talent From Across Industries
While the makers have revealed little about Arjun’s character in Operation Ganga, his casting is intriguing given his track record of playing antagonistic and morally complex characters in Hindi cinema. The nature of his role in the Mohanlal-starrer remains under wraps for now.
The film also reunites Arjun with two members of the Dhurandhar technical team. Composer Shashwat Sachdev and stunt choreographer Sea Young Oh are both part of Operation Ganga, adding another layer to Arjun’s involvement with the project.
The cast further expands the film’s pan-Indian appeal. Bhagyashri Borse, who has appeared in films including Kaantha and Lenin, is making her Malayalam debut with the project. Tamil actor Parthiban is also part of the ensemble. The actor was recently seen in a cameo as a former military officer in Pradhama Drishtiya Kuttakkar.
Operation Ganga draws from one of the most significant evacuation efforts undertaken by India during the early months of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Thousands of Indian citizens, many of them students, were stranded in Ukraine as fighting intensified in February and March 2022. The evacuation operation involved bringing citizens out through Ukraine’s western borders and neighbouring countries.
With Mohanlal leading the project and Vishnu Mohan at the helm, the film appears to be shaping up as an ambitious Malayalam production with a distinctly pan-Indian cast and crew. As filming progresses, further details about the characters and the story are expected to emerge.
