Peter Andre has sympathised with Gemma Collins after she broke down in tears during her stint on I’m A Celebrity…South Africa and has told fans that it is a lot “mentally harder” than it might look
Peter Andre has sympathised with Gemma Collins after she broke down in tears on I’m A Celebrity…South Africa. The pop star, 53, who famously met now ex-wife Katie Price when he competed on Ant and Dec’s reality survival series in 2004, has been keeping up with all the drama from in South Africa as the all-stars version continues.
Gemma, who shot to fame on Towie in 2011 and appeared on the regular edition of I’m A Celebrity 2014 but quit after a matter of days, has been back in the jungle giving it another ago, although it all proved a bit too much for her earlier in the week and she became emotional over the lack of amenities.
Writing in his new! magazine column, Peter said: “Gemma Collins really is TV gold. She was recently seen breaking down in tears as she adjusted to life without home comforts in the I’m A Celeb jungle.

“Some people might think she’s just acting out, but she may just be genuine in the way that she’s feeling. It is quite amazing when you’re actually in that situation, as to how you react to things.”
Peter, who placed third on the programme behind Jennie Bond and winner Kerry Katona, also addressed the conflict around food stealing within the camp, and explained that it the whole process is “mentally harder” than anyone of the audience would expect, especially once the hunger start to kick in.
He added: “There’s also been accusations of campmates stealing food because everyone is so hungry and, speaking from my experience, it is harder mentally than you can imagine. The starvation process is the thing that got to all of us.
“After three or four days, that’s when personalities start to come out. Most people on that show have never, ever known what it’s like to not have food at their disposal. It teaches you to appreciate the basic things in life.”
Earlier this week, Diva Forever star Gemma wept as she realised just how much she missed her life back home. She said: “can’t wash properly. I can’t have anything nice. Ive got to wash up every f**king five minutes. I am not used to this. It’s not f**king me!”
Fortunately for Gemma, former Emmerdale star Adam Thomas was on hand to comfort her. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one user said: “Adam looking after Gemma. He’s an absolute gentleman. And Gemma girllllll you are doing so welllll, so well.”
Another user said: “And this is why Gemma didn’t cope in the jungle the first time.. at least she’s having a sense of humour in her sadness. Adam is a gem.”
Peter, who made a brief return to the jungle in 2011, previously noted in his column that he had high hopes for Gemma when it was announced she was making a comeback, but wasn’t entirely sure if he would ever sign up for the South Africa edition of the programme.
He said: “It’s great to see the I’m A Celebrity South Africa line-up. They’ve got some great characters in there. I know quite a few of them. Harry Redknapp is wonderful – he’ll go really far. Gemma Collins will be a good laugh. It’ll be great. I’ve never really thought about doing it because I’ve done it twice now. I’d rather embrace new challenges – but never say never!”
* I’m A Celebrity…South Africa airs weekdays at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.
