VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Ramamohan on Saturday called upon citizens to join the movement for a cleaner and healthier environment and urged them to help build a plastic-free Andhra Pradesh by avoiding single-use plastics.
He was addressing the ‘Swarnandhra Swachh Andhra’ programme organised by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation at Koneru Basavaiah Chowdary High School in Patamata, under the supervision of municipal commissioner H.M. Dhyana Chandra.
Ramamohan cautioned against consuming hot food and beverages in disposable cups and paper plates coated with plastic, stating that it could pose health risks. He appealed to residents to avoid single-use plastic products and not to dump sanitary waste and plastic bottles into underground drainage systems.
The MLA praised Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for promoting environmental protection and plantation drives aimed at developing a “Green Andhra Pradesh”. He urged citizens to cooperate with officials and public representatives to help Vijayawada secure a better rank in Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 by maintaining cleanliness in public places and canals.
Commissioner Dhyana Chandra said single-use plastic had already been banned in the city and encouraged residents to adopt eco-friendly alternatives, including cloth bags. Cloth bags were launched and distributed during the programme with support from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board.
The programme also marked National Dengue Day with the theme “Check – Clean – Cover”, focusing on mosquito control, sanitation drives, anti-larval measures and awareness campaigns. Officials advised residents to prevent water stagnation, use mosquito repellents and seek immediate medical attention if dengue symptoms appear.
Senior municipal, medical and pollution control officials participated in the programme.
