The Prince of Wales’ former Ludgrove School classmate Humphrey Ker shared the amusing moment the future king told teachers he wanted to become a policeman, causing his classmates to burst out laughing
A childhood friend of Prince William once disclosed how the future monarch had his classmates roaring with laughter over his unusual career ambitions. Actor and comedian Humphrey Ker attended Ludgrove School in Berkshire with William, before both progressed to Eton College together for secondary school. He recalled a particularly comical episode at Ludgrove when students were asked to write about their future aspirations.
Humphrey, who has worked with major stars including Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, described how classmates reeled off typical dreams careers such as becoming a pilot or footballer before William’s turn came round, and he delivered an unusual answer.
While his peers had countless options available to them, William’s fate as heir to the throne meant his future course was already essentially mapped out – something the then-young royal appeared not to fully appreciate.
Recalling the moment to the Telegraph, Humphrey explained: “Some people said fighter pilot, Arsenal striker, this and that, the usual.”
“William said, ‘I want to be a policeman.’ And everyone burst out laughing, because of course he wasn’t going to be a policeman, we all knew everything that was going to happen in his life – he was going to be king.”
William’s course of education is now being replicated by his eldest son Prince George, who started his first year at Eton College on September 8.
George was accompanied by both his proud parents on the rainy day where they were greeted by Eton headmaster, Simon Henderson.
Before his arrival at Eton, the 13-year-old second-in-line to the throne was seen in three brand new pictures showing him wearing the traditional Eton uniform, which consists of a black tailcoat, waistcoat, pinstripe trousers and a white bow tie.
“Welcome,” Mr Henderson told him. “Good luck. Enjoy it.” William, in a matching outfit to his son, carried a closed umbrella while Kate, wearing a green dress, held one aloft against the seasonal back-to-school drizzle. William then made a joke about the weather saying: “If it rains, it rains for ages”, with Sir Nicholas remarking: “Typical”.
William attended Eton between 1995 and 2000, where he boarded at Manor House. He became the most senior royal to attend the school, although others who were educated there included the Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent and the Duke of Gloucester – and was seen as a departure from royal tradition as William’s father Charles had attended Gordonstoun in Scotland.
