HYDERABAD: Irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday said the Congress government had placed the erstwhile Mahbubnagar district at the centre of its irrigation agenda. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the minister would undertake a comprehensive two-day review of major projects in the district June 4 and 5.

“Unlike the previous regime which left several projects incomplete despite a decade in power, the Congress government is determined to transform Palamuru into a fully irrigated and agriculturally prosperous region during our tenure,” he said.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Ajilapur lift irrigation scheme in Devarakadra mandal, Uttam Kumar Reddy said the Chief Minister’s upcoming visit would cover major irrigation projects including Palamuru-Rangareddy, Nettempadu, Bheema and Kalwakurthy lift irrigation schemes and the , Koilsagar project.

Uttam Kumar Reddy, rejecting the BRS allegation that the Palamuru-Rangareddy project was nearly completed before the change of government, said not a single acre had received irrigation under the project when the Congress government assumed office. “Work on the project gathered momentum after Congress came to power. The Chief Minister’s tour will provide a major boost to irrigation development and help transform the erstwhile Mahbubnagar district into a fertile agricultural region,” he said.

The minister said the Ajilapur lift irrigation scheme, sanctioned at a cost of `32 crore, will irrigate around 1,400 acres in Ajilapur, Gaddagudem and Venkatayapalli villages using 65 million cubic feet of water from the Koilsagar balancing reservoir.
