The ruling alliance’s seat-sharing deal has put Telugu Desam (TD) cadres in Puttur in a dilemma, with former party leader D.N. Elumalai joining Jana Sena to secure the municipal chairman ticket and now relying on his former colleagues to campaign for him.

Elumalai, popularly known as Ammulu, quit the TD on Friday after the chairman’s post was allotted to Jana Sena and joined the alliance partner on Saturday. His move has angered some TD cadres, who are reluctant to campaign for him. The local leadership is trying to persuade them to support him to protect the alliance’s electoral prospects.

A key TD leader in Puttur, Elumalai had hoped to contest on the party ticket. Tirupati MLA Arani Srinivasulu welcomed him into Jana Sena on Saturday by presenting him with the party scarf and handing over the official B-form. According to party sources, TD MLA G. Bhanu Prakash is attempting to resolve the discontent among cadres and secure their support for Elumalai.

Elumalai belongs to the Modaliyar community, which has a significant presence in Puttur. He had joined the TD from the YSR Congress after differences with former minister R.K. Roja ahead of the 2024 elections.
