Mangaluru: Legislators in Karnataka may soon be able to submit questions, access records and manage legislative business electronically as the State Legislature moves to implement the National e-Vidhan Application.

In a major technology upgrade for Karnataka’s Legislature, the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to implement the National e-Vidhan Application, a digital platform aimed at modernising legislative proceedings and member services.

Addressing reporters in Mangaluru on Tuesday, Assembly Speaker UT Khader spoke about the wide range of legislative activities that would be brought onto a digital platform, making the functioning of both Houses more efficient and accessible.

A committee comprising officials from both Houses has been constituted to oversee the implementation of the project.

“The digital platform would enable legislators to submit questions electronically through their iPads instead of following the existing physical process. Replies from departments and ministries would also be made available through the system,” Khader said while narrating about the new system.

The contest in the library will be available in digital form.

While the Union Government will bear 60 per cent of the project cost, the State Government will contribute the remaining 40 per cent.

The estimated cost of implementing the system for the Legislative Assembly, including sessions held in Bengaluru and Belagavi, is around Rs 78 crore, while the Legislative Council component is expected to cost Rs 52 crore.
