BBC Radio 2 star Tina Daheley has quit the Breakfast Show after seven years.
The news journalist was a regular on the show with Scott Mills but has announced she is leaving days before his replacement Sara Cox takes over as host.
Posting to Instagram this morning, Tina said: “After more than 7 years of early alarm calls on Radio 2, I’m stepping away from Radio 2 Breakfast. It’s been one of the greatest privileges of my life to wake up with you every morning and humbling to have been trusted to deliver the news on the biggest breakfast show in Europe.
“My breakfast run ends at Radio 2, but it a started on 1Xtra, where I landed my dream job reading the news on Trevor Nelson’s Breakfast Show. From there, I spent a decade broadcasting to 1 in 4 young people in the UK on Radio 1.
“After 18 years and six back-to-back breakfast shows (probably a record in there somewhere), I’m looking forward to a lie-in. Wishing Sara and her team the very best of luck. I’ll be tuning in while doing the school run.
“I’m not leaving Radio 2, you’ll hear me between 12-2pm when Jeremy’s away and you’ll see me on BBC One after the summer. Beyond that, watch this space.”
Among those commenting on her huge news after she said she had some “personal news to share” was Dermot O’Leary. The presenter said: “Congrats Tina, great shift x.”
Another user thanked her for her time on the show. They gushed: “Thank you for being the calming voice giving us the daily news every morning. We’ve loved listening to you and your friendship with each and every breakfast show host and their team. All the best.”
And Abbie Dewhurst told her: “Ahhh, Tina. You will not believe how divine you feel with more sleep.”
It comes as drivetime host Sara Cox is braced to take over Scott Mills show from July 6th – with bosses saying the programme will feature a “fresh format”. A Hollywood legend has already been lined up to beher first guest.
Actor Tom Hanks has been booked to talk about his new film Toy Story 5 in a massive coup. And she’s set to take over the show on July 6.
Sara said of the announcement: “ Roll on the 6th July! For generations to come people will (probably) say “where were YOU when the Sara Cox Breakfast Show was launched on Radio 2 featuring the legendary Tom Hanks?” (and hopefully they’ll reply “listening and laughing along with a nice brew.”)”
Sara shared the news about the launch date on Vernon Kay’s Radio 2 show after Sara took on fellow presenter Jeremy Vine in the programme’s popular quiz, Ten to the Top.
The DJ made the announcement while appearing on Vernon Kay’s Radio 2 show on Monday, and said she is “very, very excited” to get started. Cox said: “There’s been quite a lot of mystery about when the brand new Sara Cox Breakfast Show begins on BBC Radio 2.“I’ve been quite mysterious and going, ‘it’s in the summer’ and waggling my eyebrows mysteriously. But I can now announce, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and everyone in between, please do join me for my very first Breakfast Show on Radio 2 on 6th of July.“Three weeks today! Very very excited. It is 6.30am.” She joked that she is going to set 42 alarms due to the early start, and added: “I can’t wait – it’s so exciting.”
The BBC also revealed that the new breakfast programme will include a “fresh new format” which will bring listeners’ “favourite bits” from the teatime show she previously hosted on the station.
Cox was announced as the new host of the breakfast programme in April and at the time she described the role as a “dream” and said she was “ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed”.She will be replacing former host Scott Mills. The Mirror broke the news that Scott had been sacked by the BBC earlier this year, as it emerged the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into the 53-year-old in 2016 over allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy under 16 between 1997 and 2000.Her new Breakfast Show will be available on BBC Radio 2 from 6.30am on July 6.
