Chennai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Tamil Nadu on Saturday morning, to interact with party office-bearers as part of its grassroots rejuvenation initiative “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan”.
The Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi is set to address panchayat-level office bearers in a venue at Chengalpattu in Chennai.
Addressing reporters here on Friday, AICC general secretary and Tamil Nadu in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and TNCC president B Manickam Tagore said Gandhi would address office-bearers at nearby Mamallapuram on the valedictory of the 10-day training camp (July 23-August 1) for District Congress Committee presidents.
Gandhi reached Chennai by 11 am and headed straight to the party event at the seashore town here and is set to return to Delhi by 6 PM from Chennai.
The training camp for the DCC presidents is an initiative aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan (SSA).
Rahul To Not To Meet CM Vijay
Asked about the scope for Gandhi meeting Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Tagore clarified that the top leader’s Chennai programme was organisational in nature.
Congress is part of the TVK-led coalition Cabinet.
The TNCC chief said: “This is strictly an organisational meeting.” During such programme interactions, Rahul spends nearly six hours with the district presidents in each state to discuss the future plans and the organisation.
Further, he said: “This is a travel schedule related solely to the organisation… his time is meant to be spent entirely with the district presidents.”
Ahmad Mir said: “Rahul Gandhi will have a detailed interaction with the DCC presidents and their families also. Therefore, this is important so far as strengthening the party organisation at the grassroots is concerned… Our national leader may meet some senior Congress leaders also before leaving the city.”
State Tourism Minister and Congress legislature party leader S Rajesh Kumar said he interacted on Friday with the district presidents, who were appointed under the SSA.
In a statement, the minister said that SSA was a historic effort aimed at shaping the Congress party into a robust popular movement for the future.
Gandhi is visiting to “enthuse cadres and devise new political strategies,” the TNCC said in a statement adding “Let the new India’s history begin from Tamil Nadu.”
