Hyderabad: Drinking water is being supplied to Hyderabad by lifting water over hundreds of kilometres from the Singur, Manjeera, Krishna and Godavari reservoirs, but Singur Reservoir currently has storage sufficient for only about 80 days.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has stressed the need to strengthen groundwater resources and is implementing a 99‑day Rainwater Harvesting Action Plan under the ‘Intinta Inkudu Gunta’ programme.
Of 3,435 defunct borewells identified across the city, 700 are being converted into injection wells, with 268 completed and 143 in progress. Around 34,000 households have been surveyed and 24,892 rainwater harvesting structures registered on the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari 2.0 portal. Technical assistance has been provided for 104 new systems.
At a Rainwater Harvesting Awareness Programme, recharge pits at the University College of Science, Saifabad were inaugurated by minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who said rainwater harvesting must be taken up as a social responsibility. He noted that rapid urbanisation and concretisation have reduced natural recharge, making scientific measures essential.
HMWS&SB managing director Ashok Reddy said the Board had secured first position nationally under the programme. He cited examples at Uday Blossom Apartments in Gandhinagar and Garden Towers in Banjara Hills, where recharge systems improved borewell water availability and reduced dependence on tankers.
