Ranabaali is currently the talk of the town. The film starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna was released in theatres on October 16, 2026. According to reports, Ranabaali is inspired by real events that took place between 1854 and 1878. Alongside Vijay and Rashmika, the period drama also stars Arnold Vosloo. Now, if you are wondering whether to watch Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna starrer, we will guide you.
What happens in Ranabaali?
Ranabaali begins in the 1850s’ Rayalaseema region. For those unaware, Rayalaseema is a southern part of Andhra Pradesh, India. Vijay Deverakonda plays ‘Singanamala Bobbili Ranabaali’, who is born outside a mysterious cave and is named by a sage-like man. As he grows up, he becomes a skilled horse rider and warrior in the fictional village of Singanamala. He maintains local traditions and cares deeply about his community.

The main problem arises when the British arrive. A devastating famine, caused by drought, failed crops and British colonial policies, leaves millions of people starving in Rayalaseema. Arnold Vosloo portrays ‘Sir Theodore Hector’, a British commissioner whose character is based on the real-life official Sir Richard Temple. His policies make the suffering even worse.
As the famine spreads, ‘Ranabaali’ fights against British rule to protect his village, his wife, ‘Jayamma’ (played by Rashmika Mandanna) and the people suffering around him. ‘Jayamma’ is a caring and courageous woman who feeds others even when she is hungry, supports her husband during the famine and war, and continues fighting while pregnant.
Ranabaali movie review: what works and what does not work?
Ranabaali’s major highlight is Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s chemistry. They bring real chemistry on-screen. Cinephiles also shared similar kinds of feelings. A user on X shared that the chemistry between Vijay and Rashmika is also well-executed, adding a nice balance to the serious narrative. Another user wrote:
“Whenever Vijay Deverakonda & Rashmika Mandanna share screen space, their chemistry looks absolutely beautiful. Their on-screen chemistry is simply excellent.”
It is not the first time Vijay and Rashmika have come together for a film. They first came together for the movie Geeta Govindam. The couple last appeared in the film Dear Comrade. Vijay and Rashmika have come together in Ranabaali after a 7-year hiatus.

Excessive violence in the second half does not work for the film. While a lot of violence was shown in Ranabaali, it fails to connect the audience emotionally with the suffering. In fact, the character ‘Ranabaali’ lacks emotional depth and shows unnecessary violence. When ‘Ranabaali’s’ story reaches a moment that could make viewers feel the pain of the famine and the people affected by it, the period drama shifts to another fight scene.
Several scenes in the second half show extreme cruelty against villagers, women and children. Although these scenes are disturbing, they do not create the emotional impact the makers seem to want. Instead of feeling deeply moved by the characters’ suffering, the audience may become emotionally exhausted and numb. The screenplay is also predictable and seems repetitive.
The background music by Ajay-Atul is another disappointment. During the famine scenes, the music fails to make the audience feel the scale of the tragedy. Overall, the music fails to create emotional depth in the story.
The story of Ranabaali is reportedly inspired by the history of Rayalaseema. It traces back to Rayalaseema’s downfall after the decay of the Vijayanagara Empire. After the empire’s fall, Rayalaseema went through repeated famines, extreme poverty, sudden deaths, and farmers’ suicides. The region witnessed suppression by strong local leaders. Because of constant conflicts, intense political factionalism, an extreme level of poverty and repeated crimes, Rayalaseema became a cursed land.
