MUMBAI: After making the claims of ‘corporate jihad’ in Maharashtra, BJP minister Nitesh Rane has called for the establishment of a uniform dress code in corporate spaces on the lines of educational institutions.

“Corporates should not enforce dress codes selectively. Just as there are regulations regarding hijab and burqa permissions in schools and colleges, similar restrictions should apply in the corporate sector to maintain fairness in the office,” Rane said on Wednesday.

Commenting on the controversy surrounding Lenskart’s dress code policy, the minister said, “We too believe in God. But why should corporate sectors permit the hijab and burqa, while the tilak is not allowed? If one religion’s practices are restricted, then others should be treated equally. In schools and colleges, there has been debate about hijab and burqa permissions. Likewise, in corporate spaces, these should also be banned to maintain fairness. It must not apply selectively,” Rane said.

His remarks came after Lenskart’s internal dress code guidelines, which banned bindi and tilak for its in-store employees, went viral on social media, sparking an uproar. Following the controversy, Lenskart has issued a standardised style guide, saying that it welcomes every symbol of faith and culture.

Last week, Rane had sparked a controversy by claiming ‘corporate jihad’ in Maharashtra on the backdrop of reports of alleged religious conversion and sexual harassment at an IT company office in Nashik.

Alleging that professional platforms are being misused as tools for religious conversion, the minister said that priority to Hindus in corporate jobs is the ‘need of hour’ to prevent ‘jihadist activities’ and strengthen the ‘Hindu rashtra.’

“If every platform, from trade to corporate offices, is used to target Hindus through various forms of jihad, it is time for a firm response,” Rane had said.

His remarks were in reference to the alleged attempts of religious conversion and sexual harassment that have surfaced in a BPO unit of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Nashik. The Police have arrested eight employees from the TCS unit, including seven men and a female operations manager in this case.
