Patrick Mahomes has spent most of his NFL career finding ways to stay calm when a play breaks down. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has taken plenty of hits while extending plays, scrambling for extra yards and waiting for receivers to get open.
That has become part of playing the position in Kansas City. Mahomes entered Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins with the Chiefs unbeaten and coming off a strong start to the season, while Miami was still looking for its first win.

The Chiefs were holding a 14-10 lead late in the third quarter when Mahomes faced third-and-9 from his own 5-yard line. He dropped back and threw toward Rashee Rice, but Miami pass rusher Chop Robinson reached him just as the ball left his hand.

Robinson was called for roughing the passer. Miami was also flagged for defensive holding on the same play, meaning Kansas City would have received a first down either way, but the roughing penalty gave the Chiefs 15 additional yards. Kansas City eventually moved down the field and Harrison Butker made a 34-yard field goal to make it 17-10.

Mahomes did not blame Robinson for the hit. In fact, he gave the Dolphins pass rusher credit for making a good play.
“No, he got me,” Mahomes said, per KMBC. “He got me for sure pretty good. But that’s part of playing football. They brought a good stunt with the D-line. I try to get the ball in my hands. When you throw the ball, you’re kind of exposed.”
Mahomes said Robinson hit him “pretty solid,” but he was able to get back up and finish the drive. He later connected with Travis Kelce for a touchdown as Kansas City pulled away for a 24-10 win.

The penalty became a much bigger story after the game. Fans quickly questioned why Robinson was flagged after appearing to release Mahomes during the hit and trying to avoid putting all of his weight on the quarterback.

Some went further and accused officials of giving Mahomes and the Chiefs favorable treatment. Those claims were not limited to fans, as former players and football personalities also questioned whether Robinson had done enough to avoid the penalty.

There is another side to the argument. CBS Sports rules analyst Gene Steratore defended the call, explaining that Robinson’s body weight still carried him through Mahomes and onto the quarterback. The NFL’s roughing rules specifically protect quarterbacks from being driven into the ground with a defender’s full body weight.
That leaves two different conversations around the same play. Mahomes believes Robinson got him with a good football move, while the NFL’s rules gave officials a reason to throw the flag.
The accusations against the referee are based on how the call looked to viewers, not proof that officials intentionally favored Mahomes. Still, the play has brought the familiar debate around Mahomes and NFL officiating back into the conversation.
