The Rolling Stones will release Foreign Tongues on July 10 and have been speaking about the recording process.

The Rolling Stones launched their new album in New York – as a video showed them playing around in the studio still looking young at heart. The LP called Foreign Tongues will seemingly be the last one to feature their late drummer Charlie Watts who died in 2021.

The band describe it as “a special appearance from Charlie, captured during one of his final recording sessions”. Going into more detail, frontman Mick Jagger explained: “It’s real fast, like a punk rocker… Charlie plays great — it’s a super-fast song.”

The remaining band members Jagger and Keith Richards, both 82, and Ronnie Wood, 78, are all in the final stages of their career but there is no signs of slowing down and those who have heard the new LP told the Mirror it feels full of energy, much like the band when they are on stage. A new single, titled In The Stars was released on Tuesday, alongside the record’s opening song Rough And Twisted, with the single getting a physical release on May 15. Foreign Tongues will then be released on July 10.

Speaking at a launch an event hosted by US TV star Conan O’Brien, that saw Leonardo Di Caprio amongst the audience, Jagger added: “The thing about this record is – the Stones are a rock band that also has the capacity to do ballads, country music or dance music. So we don’t get stuck in one kind of style.”

The majority of the album was recorded in London in a month and Jagger added: “Only having four weeks gave us an urgency. We’re having fun most of the time in the studio, but it’s a lot of concentration too – you’ve really got to make [a song’s] five minutes count. I love doing these recording sessions in London at Metropolis. It was a very intense few weeks recording Foreign Tongues. We had 14 great tracks and we went as fast as we could. I like the room there as it’s not too big so you can feel the passion in the room from everyone.”

Meanwhile guitarist Keith Richards insisted the band were still looking to make things sound fresh even after 60 years in the business. He said: You don’t just want to sit on what you’ve done before. We put it together, we love to do it, and there is always something more in there.

He added: “It was a month of concentrated punch. To me, it’s all about the enjoyment of it. I’m blessed to be able to do this and long may it last.”

In an instagram video to promote the LP, Jagger could be seen moaning at the studios: “It’s all f**k ups, more f**ks than good.”

But it all came good in the end and at one point Ronnie tells Jagger: “I heard your singing yesterday I thought it was brilliant.” The main trio are backed up by their core collaborators including Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford and drummer Steve Jordan.

Among the guests playing on the album are The Cure’s Robert Smith, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Paul McCartney. McCartney also played on the band’s last album, the 2023 release called Hackney Diamonds. This time around he was recording in the next door studios and took the chance to join in with the band. Guitarist Wood joked: “He wanted to tick that box… ‘Now I can say I’ve played with the Rolling Stones! Wow!’”

Wood said more generally of the album: “The atmosphere in the room was so creative, and the whole band was on top form throughout the whole process. Very often we nailed it on the first take. I hope everyone loves it.”

The album will be available on a wide range of formats, including CD, cassette, vinyl record, and special box sets, alongside the single In The Stars which will be released on CD and vinyl formats.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time, The Rolling Stones have achieved eight UK number one singles and 14 UK number one albums, their best known songs include (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Start Me Up, Brown Sugar and Jumpin’ Jack Flash. The Stones’ line-up on their first album included Sir Mick, Richards and Watts, who died in 2021, along with guitarist Brian Jones and bass player Bill Wyman. Jones died in 1969, while Wyman left the band in the early 1990s.

Jones was succeeded on guitar by Mick Taylor for a classic run of critically acclaimed albums, which included Let It Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971) and Exile On Main Street (1972), before former Faces guitarist Wood joined the band in 1975.

* Foreign Tongues by the Rolling Stones will be released on July 10 from Polydor/Universal Music.
