WARANGAL: Senior students at the Government Nursing College on the Kakatiya Medical College campus in Hanamkonda allegedly ragged a junior student by verbally abusing her and confiscating her mobile following a dispute over bus maintenance funds, officials said.

The incident occurred three days ago but came to light after the Central Anti-Ragging Committee intervened following a complaint from the victim’s parents. According to sources, students had been contributing money for diesel and maintenance as the college bus lacked sufficient funds. The dispute began when a fourth-year first semester student called her seniors in the fourth semester asking them to send their share of the contribution.

Police and college sources said the seniors allegedly took offence at being questioned by a junior student. They reportedly cornered her at the hostel, verbally abused her and forcibly took away her mobile phone.

Instead of reporting the incident to the college management, the victim informed her parents, who later lodged a complaint through email with the Central Anti-Ragging Committee.

Following directions from the central body, the college management summoned the accused students and their parents for an inquiry and counselling session. As part of disciplinary action, the college directed the seniors to issue a formal apology to the victim. The students involved were also shifted to different hospitals for their clinical practice sessions.

The director of medical education took a serious view of the incident and summoned college officials to Hyderabad to submit a detailed report on the case and the safety measures in place at the institution.
