The Champions League had its first match day of the season with the qualification round commencing. However, it wasn’t the most exciting day as five of the six games ended in big wins with the standout game being Rapallo versus Dunaújváros.

UVSE Helia-D beat Spandau 04 18-7 to start their campaign off on the high. The Hungarian side scored the first six goals, with five different players on the score sheet, and led 7-1 after the first quarter. That set the tone for the rest of the game. Spandau made it much tighter in the second quarter, matching UVSE 3-3 with two goals from Elena Ludwig, but trailed 10-4 at halftime. Rapallo Pallanuoto edged Dunaújváros 8-7 in the Champions League game of the day. Goals from Vukovic, Meijer, Bianconi and Bacelle gave the Italian side a terrific start, and Rybanska’s goal for Dunaújváros made it 4-1 after the first quarter. Kenez opened the second quarter by pulling the gap back to two, but Rapallo scored again and the sides traded goals to finish 2-2, making it 6-3 at halftime. After more than four minutes without a goal in the third, Rybanska’s second made it 6-4, and that was the only goal of the quarter. Roberta Bianconi made it 7-4 early in the fourth. Astralpool CN Sabadell crushed GZC Donk 26-4 in front of their home crowd. The Spanish side scored eight goals in the first quarter without conceding, and the second began the same way, with Sabadell scoring the first four goals to lead 12-0. Donk finally scored twice before halftime to make it 12-2. The third quarter resembled the first, as Sabadell ploughed through the Dutch side’s defence for seven unanswered goals. Both teams scored inside the first minute of the fourth. Sabadell then added four more before Semme van Ewijk scored Donk’s fourth goal of the game. Two more for Sabadell completed the comprehensive win.

Marina Pineda and Emmerson Houghton each scored twice in the first quarter for Catalunya, and the Spanish side led 4-1 after the first eight minutes despite Vasiliki Laskaridou scoring a penalty for Glyfada. Catalunya kept control in the second quarter, which they won 4-2 to lead 8-3 at halftime. They pulled clear in the third, which finished 7-2 in their favour, with Houghton, Maria Abarca and Alba Inglavaga among the scorers. Catalunya also won the final quarter 6-3 to complete a comfortable win. Houghton led the scoring with five goals.
