Vijayawada:Giddalur MLA Muttumula Ashok Reddy has urged the state government to allocate Rs 4 crore for the development of the historic Cumbum Tank as a tourism destination.

The MLA met tourism minister Kandula Durgesh at the Secretariat in Velagapudi, Amaravati, and submitted a representation seeking development of tourism infrastructure at the centuries-old water body in Markapur district. The Cumbum Tank is considered one of Asia’s largest and oldest man-made lakes.

He said that despite its heritage value and tourism potential, the site lacks basic amenities and visitor facilities. He requested the government to modernise the surroundings and develop essential infrastructure to attract tourists.

Ashok Reddy said the project would improve tourism prospects, generate local employment and contribute to regional economic growth.

Durgesh said the government, under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Konidela Pawan Kalyan, is preparing plans to strengthen the tourism sector in the State.

He assured that steps would be taken to sanction funds for the development of Cumbum Tank and said efforts would be made to develop it as an international tourist destination.
