Rylan Clark couldn’t contain his frustration while hosting his BBC Radio 2 show this weekend, with the former X Factor star admitting that being repeatedly snubbed is “killing me”

Rylan Clark ended up handing over the reins of his BBC Radio 2 show to his co-star on Saturday, in response to an awkward on air blunder. It came after the presenter complained about the fact that his weekend show still hasn’t received any awards.

Things started to go downhill when Rylan’s regular Couch Potatoes quiz descended into confusion. The star welcomed two previous winners back to the airwaves to compete once again, but was given incorrect information about which listener he’d be speaking to first.

He introduced the first contestant as Matt, when he was actually speaking to the second contestant, Mark, which left Rylan telling his producer, Simon, to “just admit you got it wrong”.

Rylan then apologised before realising he’d mixed up the two names yet again, with Mark clarifying: “It’s Mark! I’m Mark, I’m the champion from a few weeks ago!”

While everyone in the studio burst into laughter, an exasperated Rylan jokingly exclaimed: “Oh no, this is ridiculous! Right, hang on a minute, is there a ghost or something? What is going on? Everyone stop! Stop, collaborate and listen, stop!”

Explaining the mix-up, Rylan told listeners: “I was just told that I was speaking to Matt, then I was speaking to Mark and then four people started talking… and it all just got a bit confusing.”

After clarifying “I’ve sorted it all now”, Rylan asked Matt how he was, prompting the listener to reply: “I’m not bad! Firstly, how you’re not up for an award for your show, I just don’t know!”

Showing his appreciation, Rylan aimed a cheeky swipe at The ARIAS (The Audio and Radio Industry Awards) for failing to nominate him, saying: “Thank you, thank you! Do you know what I mean?

“Always snubbed at The ARIAS even though I host the thing. It kills me, I’m the host of it and I can’t even get a nomination!”

Rylan then got interrupted again by Simon about how he was conducting the quiz, leading him to throw in the towel and tell producer Lotte Uttley and traffic reporter Sally Boazman to step in and replace him.

The former X Factor contestant explained: “Simon is talking in my ear again, I’m just going to put this out there, Simon is going, ‘Mark’s first, it’s clear in the script’, I said, ‘yes, but Mark was our original champion, right? So I thought our new champion would go first this week’. We’ve had this conversation three times, Simon!

“Lotte, Sally, do you know what? Lotte, for today, do you know what’s going to happen? You’re going to ask the questions, I’m going to be a lifeline. I’m done! Come round here, come round here, now you can see what I have to put up with!”

After playing a song, Lotte got on with the quiz, telling listeners: “Well, apparently, we’re back for Couch Potatoes. Now, a little bit of a change of plan…”

Sally then chimed in to say, “Rylan’s having a tantrum”, before the presenter quipped in response: “I’ve had enough!”

Despite all the chaos, Rylan, who enjoyed being a lifeline in the quiz for the first time, went on to share how proud he was of Lotte for taking over as host of the game, after she admitted to feeling nervous about reading aloud live on air due to her dyslexia.
