The mortal remains of seven Odisha residents who were killed after their car was swept away by a rain-swollen stream in Madhya Pradesh are being brought to Bhubaneswar, officials said.
The bodies are being transported in special ambulances from Nalkheda in Agar Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh and are expected to reach Odisha on Saturday.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the seven deceased from the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those killed in the accident.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Majhi said the state government would provide the assistance after completion of the identification process.
“For those who have been declared dead and identified, the Government of India has announced assistance, while the state government will provide Rs 5 lakh per person. Once the identification is completed, the financial assistance will be provided to their families along with our condolences,” the Chief Minister said.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda when the car carrying the devotees was swept away while crossing a rain-swollen stream following heavy rainfall in the area.
Seven Odisha residents and the local driver were killed in the accident. The deceased included three children and two women.
The Odisha government is coordinating with the Madhya Pradesh authorities for the transportation of the bodies and other arrangements for their return to the state.
Several parts of Madhya Pradesh have been witnessing heavy rainfall, causing streams and other water bodies to swell rapidly.
