VIJAYAWADA: NTR district electoral roll observer M.V. Seshagiri Babu on Friday directed officials to ensure the transparent and time-bound disposal of all claims and objections received during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Addressing a meeting with MPs, MLAs and representatives of political parties at the Vijayawada Collectorate, Seshagiri Babu said all applications relating to additions, deletions and corrections in the electoral rolls must be thoroughly verified before orders are passed.
He instructed officials to complete inquiries within seven days of issuing notices and dispose of at least 70 cases every day to clear the pendency. Statements recorded during field-level verification should be documented accurately and all proceedings maintained properly, he said.
The observer also directed officials to share details of claims and objections with recognised political parties in accordance with Election Commission guidelines to ensure transparency. He stressed the need for close coordination among Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Booth Level Officers (BLOs), Booth Level Agents (BLAs) and political parties to safeguard the voting rights of eligible electors while removing ineligible names from the rolls.
District election officer and NTR district collector Dr G. Lakshmisha asked BLOs to exercise utmost care while updating the rolls. He said deficiencies in the clarity of photographs in some draft electoral rolls had been noticed and should be rectified. Officials were also asked to examine cases where members of the same family had been assigned to different polling stations and, wherever permissible under the rules, place them in the same polling station.
Representatives of political parties sought proper verification of cases involving existing voters who had previously exercised their franchise but were unable to produce any of the 11 prescribed documents. They also requested that spouses be shifted to the same polling station wherever applicable.
The representatives further urged officials to launch a special voter enrolment drive and create awareness among eligible young voters. Photo electoral rolls were later handed over to representatives of various political parties.
