EXCLUSIVE: Slow Horses star Christopher Chung – who plays Roddy Ho, tells the Mirror of his plans to play a Bond baddie while his co-star is hotly tipped to land the main role

Slow Horses star Christopher Chung is one of the names in the hat to play the next James Bond, but he says taking on the iconic British secret agent would destroy his nerves.

“I’ve heard that rumour!”, he tells the Mirror, when we ask about all the 007 chatter. “Let’s spread that around a little further, shall we?!”

But asked if he’d actually be seriously up for taking on the mantle of the suave womaniser with the ‘license to kill’, the Australian star shakes his head doubtfully.

“Obviously, it’s an incredible, career-defining role. Yes. But it’s also such a huge undertaking for any actor that ends up taking that part. I’m just way too anxious to do it. It’s a lot of pressure.”

Chung may be a bit of a rank outsider, but his Slow Horses co-star, Jack Lowden has been heavily tipped to take over from Daniel Craig for some months now.

Even the show’s director, Adam Randall, has thrown his weight behind the Scot, saying,“I think you’ve seen from six seasons that he’d be pretty perfect.”

As for Chung, there is a role in the Bond franchise he wouldn’t mind trying. “I think I’d have a lot of fun in a peripheral role, maybe as a baddie. Yeah, a bit of a Rami Malek, you know? He was a fantastic villain in No Time To Die.”

The 38-year-old Melbourne native is currently filming season eight of Slow Horses and admits, the Apple TV+ thriller, about a dysfunctional group of disgraced MI5 agents, is a dream to be a part of. “Oh, it’s amazing. It’s been the last five years of my life, it’s a gift of a job.”

He plays arrogant computer genius Roddy Ho, and says working with national treasure Gary Oldman – the group’s obnoxious, lazy and flatulent boss, Jackson Lamb, is a lot more fun off-camera than people might expect from a ‘serious’ actor.

“You think that someone of that kind of caliber would be very insular and serious, but he’s so open and he just treats us like one big family”, says Chung. “He’s the most fun to work with.. He’s such a joker on set, it’s actually hard to get any work done sometimes.”

Speaking at the press night for Don Black’s musical review From the Heart, supporting his wife, West End star Francis Mayli McCann, Chung confesses he’s also itching to tread the boards again.

The actor met McCann when they both starred in 2014 musical Here Lies Love, at London’s Royal National Theatre. He says, “I’m dying to get back on stage at some point, because that’s where I started. Nights like this remind me of that. Theatre’s where my wife and I met.”
