The upcoming sequel to the cult classic fantasy horror film Tumbbad has just received a major star power boost. Actor-producer Sohum Shah has officially announced that Alia Bhatt is joining the cast of Tumbbad 2.
Sohum Shah took to his Instagram handle to share the casting update with fans. He posted a photo of himself alongside Alia, with both actors wearing matching black outfits. Expressing his excitement for the upcoming project, Sohum welcomed her to the franchise by writing, “A new chapter unfolds. Welcome to #Tumbbad2, @aliaabhatt #PralayAayega. See you at the movies.”
The update comes only a few months after the creators of the project officially locked in the theatrical release date for Tumbbad 2. After weeks of online speculation, motion posters, and cryptic social media updates, the makers announced that the movie will release in theatres on December 3, 2027.
Sharing the film’s poster earlier, Sohum had already set the tone for what audiences can expect from the sequel. He hinted at a return to the eerie, dark universe of the franchise with the caption, “A sinful past, an ominous future. The hunger rises; the legacy of greed continues.”
In a press release, Sohum talked about what makes this sequel so meaningful to him and how the team plans to build upon the foundation of the original story. He shared, “Tumbbad has always been very special to me, and with Tumbbad 2, the idea is to take that world forward in a way that feels deeper and more expansive. We are building on the mythology and atmosphere that audiences connected with while exploring new layers within the story. It is something that will feel familiar in its essence, but also new in the way it unfolds.”
Tumbbad 2 will be directed by Adesh Prasad. The project is being produced by Sohum Shah under his production banner, Sohum Shah Films, in association with Pen Studios. Alongside the addition of Alia Bhatt, the film’s star-studded ensemble will also feature Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a key role. Kohrra 2 actor Prayrak Mehta is also starring in the film.
