Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy explained that he wasn’t happy with himself for shouting profanities during a heated exchange with his quarterback Aaron Rodgers that was caught on a hot mic during a 27-24 loss to the Browns in Week 4.

It was brought up during a press conference on Monday, and McCarthy said he sat down with Rodgers over the weekend to hash things out.

“I wouldn’t classify it as normal, no. But I think the reality of it is, it’s a 20-year relationship.. I think the fact that we were able to sit and talk numerous times over the weekend about that and a number of things,” McCarthy said in advance of Pittsburgh’s Week 5 game against the Colts.

… Not to put any pressure on my daughter, but I’m getting to grandfather age. I don’t want to be saying those type of words. It’s an emotional competitive environment. But I think it’s something that we can definitely learn from.”

Rodgers became upset during the first quarter of Thursday’s game against Cleveland while waiting for McCarthy to make a play call.

A Prime Video mic picked up Rodgers yelling, “What the f–k? Call it!” while looking at McCarthy on the sideline.

“F–king a–hole,” McCarthy responded.

Play-by-play announcer Al Michaels and and analyst Kirk Herbstreit laughed at the moment on the broadcast.

“He’s not happy,” Michaels said, adding that Rodgers did something similar and kept looking over at the bench” during Week 3 against the Bengals. The Steelers won that game against Cinncinati, 30-27.

McCarthy was confused when initially asked about the heated moment after the game, according to NBC Sports, which said the coach was told by a Steelers PR director, Burt Lauten that it was captured on the broadcast.

Rodgers wasn’t asked about the exchange.

The former four-time NFL MVP — who is in his 22nd and final NFL season — was 22 of 40 for 299 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in Thursday’s loss to the Browns.

McCarthy coached Rodgers with the Packers from 2006 through December 2018 and they won a Super Bowl together in Green Bay with a win over Steelers during the 2010 season.

The pair are close and Rodgers previously said McCarthy was big reason he signed with the Steelers in June 2025.

Pittsburgh (2-2) hosts the 2-2 Colts in an AFC showdown at 1 pm ET on Sunday.
