A man has pleaded guilty after he stalked Strictly Come Dancing and YouTube star Joe Sugg for four years
Strictly Come Dancing and YouTube star Joe Sugg was stalked by a man for four years, a court has heard.
Robert Beckman, 31, sent emails, social media comments and letters to the Strictly Come Dancing star – who is in a relationship with and shares a child with professional dancer Dianne Buswell – since 2022.
The messages had been sent from multiple locations, as well as Gatwick Airport. A court heard how the messages and contact left Joe in a state of “serious alarm and distress” and affected his daily life.
Brighton Crown Court heard that Beckman travelled from his home in Michigan to the UK and continued to contact Joe. He has pleaded guilty to pursuing a course of conduct which amounted to stalking.
The charge against Beckman read: “He pursued a course of conduct, namely sending multiple email, letters and social media comments, which amounted to stalking causing Joseph Sugg serious alarm or distress, which had a substantial adverse effect on his usual day-to-day activities when you knew or ought to have known that your course of conduct would cause alarm or distress.”
Joe was not in court to hear Beckman’s plea. Beckman faces a possible prison sentence when he is sentenced in October.
Joe and Dianne recently welcomed their first child together, a baby boy called Bowden. The pair have sparked rumours they will marry soon after becoming parents to their little boy.
Discussing the possibility of them getting wed, he said: “We have discussed this. By the way, we see the amount of comments that ask when are we going to get married? When are we going to get married, when are we going to get married?
“Like obviously, one day we will. But we do talk about it and like talk about…especially if we’re going to a lot of, like, friends’ weddings at the moment and things like that. We always have the discussion as to how we would do it if we got married and, like, what we like about weddings and also what we don’t like about weddings.”
Dianne previously opened up about motherhood and how “demanding” her job is, but said she would happily take a career break to have child. She said: “It is quite tough because my job is quite demanding, and I love it so much.
“It is a tough one to balance out and think about. It would take a lot of thought, but eventually one day we will get there, but there is lots happening at the moment. It will happen when it’s supposed to.”
