Already in pain from shoulder injuries, two female students stood together on Sunday, supporting their friends’ families and crying as they recalled how a heavy lighting truss fell on the women’s side during the Dandiya event at MVSR Engineering College, Nadergul, killing their friend. Several others remain in the ICU at Yashoda Hospital, Malakpet.
S. Ananya, a second‑year student, said she had narrowly escaped. “The female students had a deadline of 4.30 pm, and we paid ₹300 for tickets. Dandiya began at 6.30 pm, and around 7.25 pm I was recording a video when the truss fell. I bent down to adjust my dress and escaped, but injured my shoulder. My friends beside me are in the ICU with spinal injuries. The truss fell near the female students’ side,” she said.
“Despite our injuries, we lifted the truss, and male students rushed in to help. It was painful to see my friends trapped underneath and lose consciousness,” she added.
The institute had combined technical events, including a hackathon, with cultural programmes. Students said they had requested the management to organise Dandiya as no such events had been held for two years.
Another female student, who requested anonymity, said: “There are three of us, and one did not attend. It was a tragic night. We suffered scratches near our necks and shoulders and received treatment. All our friends have been admitted, and we want to see how they are doing. Ambulances arrived, and seniors and faculty took us to hospital in their cars.”
She added: “There was a lot of noise from the DJ. In a moment of enjoyment, the truss suddenly fell on us.”
Ramya, whose closest friend Shravya is in the ICU, said she had decided not to attend the event and went home. On hearing of her friend’s condition, she rushed to hospital and broke down in tears. Male students said they helped lift the rods as hundreds gathered at the spot, and in the chaos a stampede left several of them injured.
