Nalgonda: A sudden storm accompanied by strong wind hit several mandals in erstwhile Nalgonda district on Sunday evening, damaging houses and paddy stocks stored at procurement centers, and uprooting trees and electric poles.
The worst-hit are Nalgonda, Kattangur, nakrekal, Suryapet, Munagala, Kodad, Nereducherla, Madgulapally, and Thipparthy mandals. Strong winds blew away tarpaulins covering the paddy stocks stored at procurement centers. Subsequent rain soaked the paddy stocks.
According to officials, two lakh quintals of paddy had been stocked at the paddy procurement centers in Nalgonda district alone. Amount of paddy damaged by the rain is yet to be estimated.
In Nakrekal town, four houses suffered damage, but no one has been injured. Trees in several villages got uprooted and fell across the roads.
Power supply got disrupted at Kanagal due to falling down of electricity poles at several places.
Lightning struck a masjid at Dorakunda in Kodad mandal of Suryaper district, damaging one of its minars.
Traffic on National Highway 65 came to a halt for some time when electric wires fell across the highway at Kattamagudem in Kodad mandal. There has been no untoward incident, as authorities had switched off electricity supply on noticing the strong winds.
A transformer blasted, leading to a fire at the 33/11 KV sub-station in Venkatadripalem of Miryalaguda mandal, halting electricity supply in Miryalaguda and surrounding villages. Officials of the Electricity department immediately took up repairs and restored the power supply.
