Not many cafes have a row of bronzed, lacquered ducks hanging in the window, but then this institution, also known as Sun Ming Coffee Lounge, is no ordinary cafe – this is a cha chaan teng. That means you’ll find many classic breakfast and lunch dishes true to any Hong Kong diner, leading into a generous list of hot pots and barbecued meats.
If the name sounds familiar, it might be because of the relation to Sun Ming Restaurant in Hurstville, which in recent years has attracted a cult following thanks in part to the magnetic personality of its second-generation owner, David Chan. But Sun Ming Parramatta has its own 30-year history, with Raymond Chan, David’s cousin, now at the helm.
Come for Spam and omelette sandwiches, stacked peanut-butter French toast and soft, soothing congee – one of the best versions you’ll find this side of Causeway Bay. Loud, lively, and as vital as ever.
Best for: A quick solo lunch, or dinner with friends and family
