Tarik Skubal cried when he found out he was being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers — and it wasn’t tears of joy.
Skubal discussed the emotional departure from the Detroit Tigers on the Pardon My Take podcast.
“A lot of those guys are my best friends, and it’s a bunch of men and I’m crying,” Skubal said. “I hate crying. I don’t cry a lot. When my wife walked down the aisle I didn’t cry because I was so nervous. And I’m crying in a clubhouse with a bunch of other grown men saying bye to people and giving everybody a hug.”
Skubal spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with Detroit and was in the middle of his seventh year with the organization when he was traded to the Dodgers. His availability on the trade block this summer was highly-speculated as rumors swirled on where Skubal would land if the Tigers let him go in a blockbuster deal.
On Aug. 1, the Tigers traded Skubal to the back-to-back World Series champions in exchange for three prospects, outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith.
Despite joining a World Series contender, it was evidently a difficult transition for the two-time Cy Young winner after spending nearly a decade with the Tigers.
Skubal made his Dodgers debut this week against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts across six innings of work at Wrigley Field.
The 29-year-old is only a rental for the Dodgers this season as he is set to hit free agency at the conclusion of the 2026 season. But there is already speculation that Los Angeles will attempt to bring back the ace on a long-term contract.
