Telangana appears to be lagging behind major electronics manufacturing hubs in securing projects under the Centre’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, as per details placed before the Lok Sabha.
Union minister of state for electronics and information technology Jitin Prasada, informed that Telangana had only one approved applicant under the PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing (LSEM) and one under PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware.
According to the state-wise break-up, 32 applicants have been approved under the PLI Scheme for LSEM. Telangana accounted for one, while Maharashtra led with seven applicants, followed closely by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh with six each. Andhra Pradesh had two approved applicants, whereas Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu also secured applicants.
Under PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware, covering 27 approved applicants, Telangana again figured with only one unit. In contrast, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh had secured six applicants each, Maharashtra three and Haryana and Karnataka two each. Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Pondicherry have one applicant each in this category.
Policy observers believe this indicated that Telangana was yet to fully convert its IT services strength into a diversified electronics and hardware manufacturing base.
“The numbers show that Telangana is punching below its weight in PLI-linked manufacturing,” said Dr S. Pradeep Reddy, a Hyderabad-based electronics industry analyst. “Unless the state moves quickly on land allotment, plug-and-play industrial infrastructure and targeted investor outreach, competing States will consolidate their lead in high-value electronics production,” he added.
With neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka cornering a larger share of approved units, the latest data puts pressure on Telangana to go for a sharper, more aggressive strategy to position itself as a serious electronics manufacturing destination, beyond its traditional IT and services footprint.
