Geno Smith is commuting to One Jets Drive for the first time in nearly a decade. Odell Beckham Jr. is back in Giants blue for the first time in eight years.
On paper, the improbable reunions make sense, given the options available. But what are the odds that either second stint will be considered a success?
It is surreal to see Smith back with the Jets, reviving memories of his embarrassing tenure with the team that selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. In four seasons with the Jets, Smith went 12-18 as the starting quarterback with 28 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions. Of course, he is best remembered for losing his starting job in 2015 after teammate IK Enemkpali broke Smith’s jaw in the locker room with a sucker punch, stemming from a $600 debt owed by the quarterback.
(Side note: I was there that day. I’m not sure I’ve ever attended a more bizarre press conference than the impromptu preseason practice gathering in which Todd Bowles shared that news.)
