Kate Middleton showcases a new 1950s style in a red polka dot midi dress – and Boden’s £119 version will give you her look for less
We’ve come to expect a crisp, tailored two-piece from Princess Kate, so when the royal stepped out yesterday wearing a printed red dress that looks like it came straight out of a 1950s magazine, we were surprised, to say the least.
Joining her father-in-law, King Charles, at St. James’s Palace yesterday evening for a reception honouring cancer research, Kate chose to wear a Rodarte midi dress. Marking her first time wearing the designer, and also her first venture for quite some time into vintage-style dressing, Kate looked like the picture of retro elegance.
Her exact Rodarte dress is practically sold out in every size, as you’d expect, and will set you back around £1,500. But, if you’re looking for a way to copy Kate’s style for a lot less, Boden is saving the day once more with a close-match alternative: its Amber Pleat Jersey Midi Dress.
Priced at £119, it’s a more casual take on Kate’s number, but will still give you the full polka dot effect. Featuring box pleats to create a full skirt, perfectly balancing out the volume of the puff sleeves, it still has that retro look to it, but the jersey fabric makes it more daywear-appropriate, rather than evening attire.

Boden notes the Amber Pleat dress as ‘selling like hotcakes’, with some sizing already running out of stock, but if you’re quick, you may be lucky enough to nab your chosen size. Plus, with length options to suit petite, regular and tall body shapes, it guarantees the skirt will fall to just the length you want it.
Reviewers are loving this polka dot jersey dress, with many saying they’ll be wearing it all summer – and buying it in other colourways.
“This dress is a good fit, and I bought it as a comfortable summer dress. The material is very good, and it washes very well,” says one, while another adds: “This dress is great. I bought it for a graduation party. The colour is beautiful & it has pockets (bonus). For reference, I’m 5’6, 145 lbs, curvy & the size 8 fit me perfectly.”
“I love this dress! It fits perfectly and the fabric is great for hot summer weather. It is the perfect addition to my work wardrobe,” says a third.
A few others do point out the length can be a little long, so if you are on the petite side, don’t forget to pick your size from the ‘petite’ length option.
In other Kate shopping news, the Princess recently re-wore her favourite under-£150 charm necklace with hidden meaning in Italy. She has a few carefully chosen pieces of jewellery that she wears on repeat, including her Nura Pearl Necklace from Monica Vinader. The necklace has been worn on countless occasions by Princess Kate, and features a delicate gold chain with a teardrop-shaped pearl pendant.
Both pieces are sold separately, with the chain costing £69 and the pendant priced at £75, meaning you can shop the whole look for £144.
