An 18-month-old toddler who was pronounced dead after being pulled unresponsive from a swimming pool in Arizona was found breathing more than five hours later in a hospital morgue, according to a recently released police report.

The incident occurred on February 8 during a Super Bowl gathering at a home in Gilbert, a suburb of Phoenix. According to police, the child was discovered face-down in an in-ground swimming pool and was rushed to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center for emergency treatment.

Despite resuscitation efforts, the toddler was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m., the police report said.

However, the case took a dramatic turn when a transporter from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived more than five hours later to collect the child’s body from the hospital’s “cold room.” The transporter discovered that the toddler was still breathing.

Hospital staff immediately responded and the child was rushed back for emergency medical care.

Authorities have not released further details about the child’s current condition or how the mistaken declaration of death occurred. The toddler’s identity has been withheld in the police report.

The extraordinary incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the initial determination of death and the medical procedures followed. Authorities have not announced whether an investigation into the case is underway.
